Solar Victoria Solar Battery Loans Guide
The application process consists of two stages: an initial eligibility check followed by a financial assessment. Detailed steps are outlined in Step 3 and Step 4 on this page.
In 2023-24, there are 4,500 interest-free loans available, each up to $8,800.
As a Victorian homeowner, you may qualify for a solar battery loan if you meet the following criteria:
- You are the owner-occupier of the property where the system will be installed.
- Your combined household taxable income is less than $210,000 per year.
- Your property is valued at under $3 million.
- The property has not previously received a solar battery rebate.
- The property has a solar panel system with an inverter capacity of at least 5kW, or will have one installed alongside the solar battery.
- The energy storage solution must have a capacity of at least 6kWh and be listed on Solar Victoria’s approved battery product list.
- The property does not currently have an energy storage system.
- Pre-approval from your Distributed Network Service Provider (DNSP) is obtained to connect the battery to the grid safely.
- The owner agrees to receive information from their DNSP about participating in battery trials to maximize the value of the battery.
Battery storage may not be suitable for all households and circumstances. It’s recommended to research thoroughly before starting your battery journey to ensure it is the right choice for your home. Note that the solar battery rebate is not available for homes under construction.
Begin your research now and contact an authorized retailer when you are confident that a battery is the right investment for your home.
There are several reasons to install a solar battery, some of which include:
- Reducing energy costs
- Tackling climate change
- Achieving energy independence
- Providing backup during blackouts
- Transitioning to an all-electric home
Installing a battery is a significant investment for most households. Therefore, it is important to research thoroughly and answer the following questions to find the right product for your needs:
- How do you use energy in your home?
- What system size should you choose?
- What is the installation cost vs expected savings?
- What other factors should you consider?
- Are you ready for a battery?
You should also consider whether you want the battery to operate in “standalone” mode, your energy needs in such a situation, and whether any additional wiring or electrical upgrades may be required.
When applying for a Solar Battery loan, consider the savings on energy bills compared to the cost of loan repayments. More information on what you need to know before installing a battery can be found here.
Once you have completed your research and are satisfied that a battery is right for you, find retailers who can provide designs and quotes for your system.
To be eligible for a solar battery loan, your installation must be carried out by a Solar Victoria authorized solar retailer.
We strongly recommend obtaining at least three quotes for roughly the same system size and functionality.
Before accepting a quote from a retailer, research the company thoroughly, check their customer reviews, and ask as many questions as needed to feel comfortable that the proposed battery system is a good investment for your circumstances.
We do not recommend accepting a quote or paying a deposit until your solar battery loan application is fully approved and all eligibility and financial requirements are met.
At a minimum, confirm with your retailer that any deposit you pay is fully refundable.
Your authorized solar retailer will need to provide you with a written quote containing the information you need to make an informed decision. They will then send your quote to us, which will initiate your initial eligibility application.
Once we receive your quote from the retailer, you will get an email with a link to complete your initial eligibility application on the Service Victoria Portal. You can review the eligibility criteria at the top of this page.
Documents Required to Prove Eligibility
When applying via the Solar Victoria Portal, you’ll need to provide proof of identity, income, and property ownership. Ensure you have all necessary documents ready.
Proof of Identity
You must enter details from any two of the following forms of ID:
- Driver’s license or learner permit
- Medicare card
- Australian passport
- Australian birth certificate
- Australian citizenship certificate
- Foreign passport (must have a valid Australian Visa)
- Immicard
Make sure the names on both documents are identical.
For more information about Australian citizenship, visit the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs (citizenship website).
Proof of Property Ownership
You need to provide details of all homeowners to confirm property ownership. Enter the names of all homeowners exactly as they appear on your council rates notice.
If you don’t have a council rates notice for an established property, please contact Solar Victoria for assistance.
Proof of Income
Provide documentation for each person listed as an owner on your council rates notice or copy of your Certificate of Title.
For properties with multiple owners, proof of income documents for all listed owners for the same financial year are required.
Check the options for proof of income documents based on your financial situation here.
This initial eligibility check must be completed by you, not the solar retailer. Refer to the user guide below for application instructions.

Applying for More Than One Solar Homes Product?
If you’re applying for both a solar panel rebate and interest-free loan AND a solar battery loan, you’ll receive separate emails for each quote. A separate eligibility application is required for each product. For a hot water rebate, confirm you meet the eligibility criteria and submit a separate application.
After passing your initial eligibility check, we’ll send you an email explaining how to complete your financial check and submit your loan application. You’ll need to provide the following documents:
- Credit check through Equifax, less than 30 days old
- Completed and signed financial self-declaration form
- Documents to confirm your declared income
Credit Check
To be approved for a loan, complete a credit check through Equifax.
Equifax offers free credit checks, which take around 10 minutes. For guidance, review the document below.

The MoneySmart website offers more information about credit checks and credit reports.
Financial Self-Declaration and Supporting Documents
Complete a self-assessment of your living expenses and income via the financial self-declaration form we provide.
This information helps verify your ability to make regular payments for the interest-free loans without experiencing hardship. You will need to supply supporting documents such as recent pay slips.
For multiple applicants, we need a credit check and supporting documents from both applicants to confirm declared income.
Return these documents promptly to expedite your loan application process.
Responsible Lending
We are a responsible lender and assess each applicant’s financial circumstances to determine if the proposed loan suits their situation. Before entering into a loan agreement, visit the MoneySmart website for advice on managing loan repayments.
More information is available in our FAQs.
After submitting your documents, we will assess your loan application and inform you of the outcome.
Once your loan application is approved, contact your retailer to schedule your system installation.
On the installation day, your installer must scan the QR code in your loan confirmation email.
After installation is finalized, remit the owed amount to the retailer. This sum represents the total cost minus the interest-free loan amount and any applicable Solar Victoria rebates you may have received.
Your loan repayments will be automatically deducted from your designated account starting 30 days following Solar Victoria’s approval of the installation.

Maximizing Your Solar Battery Investment for Greater Efficiency and Savings
With solar battery storage, you can significantly increase the self-consumption of your solar-generated energy. This means that the energy your solar panels produce during the day can be stored and used when sunlight is not available, reducing your reliance on the grid. The result? Lower electricity bills and a greener, more sustainable energy consumption pattern.
Solar batteries allow you to store excess solar power generated during off-peak hours for use during peak demand times. This not only avoids the higher charges associated with grid energy consumption during these periods but also enhances your energy independence.
Solar batteries provide an essential backup power solution during outages, ensuring that your business operations or household activities can continue uninterrupted. This level of grid independence is invaluable for maintaining continuity and security.
Solar battery systems may qualify for various rebates or incentives that reduce the overall cost and enhance the return on investment. These programs are designed to encourage renewable energy adoption and can significantly offset initial installation costs.
Understanding Key Solar Battery Technologies
Lithium-ion battery systems dominate the solar battery market due to their high efficiency, long lifespan, and superior safety features. They are the preferred choice for residential and commercial solar battery systems, offering reliable energy storage solutions.
The capacity of a battery (measured in kWh) determines how much energy it can store, while the power output (measured in kW) dictates how quickly that energy can be delivered. Understanding these two factors is crucial when selecting the right battery size for your energy needs.
All batteries experience degradation over time, which affects their capacity and efficiency. Factors such as usage, temperature, and charging cycles contribute to this natural process, making it important to consider when planning for long-term energy storage solutions.
Financial Considerations for Maximum ROI
While the initial investment in solar batteries can be significant, the long-term cost-saving benefits through reduced utility bills and potential incentives can lead to a favorable return on investment (ROI).
Numerous government and utility programs offer rebates or financial incentives to support the adoption of solar batteries. These can significantly reduce the initial cost and improve the financial viability of your solar investment.
A comprehensive ROI analysis will consider factors such as energy savings, avoided grid charges, and the potential value of rebates or incentives. This analysis is crucial for understanding the financial impact of integrating a solar battery system.
Follow Recommended Maintenance Practices
Simple maintenance tasks, such as visual inspections and keeping your battery system free from dust and debris, can go a long way in ensuring its optimal performance and lifespan.
Understand Warranty Terms
Familiarizing yourself with the manufacturer’s warranty terms and conditions is crucial for protecting your investment. For any repairs or maintenance beyond your capability, contacting a qualified technician is advisable.
By following these guidelines and making informed decisions, you can maximize the value and efficiency of your solar battery system, contributing to a more sustainable and energy-independent future.
