Solar Panel (PV) Rebate Guide

Solar panel rebates up to $1,400, plus an option for an interest-free loan, are available for both existing homes and homes under construction.

The Solar Homes Program offers rebates of up to $1,400 for the installation of solar panel (PV) systems. These incentives are available to Victorians with existing homes, homes under construction, and rental properties. Those who have previously received a rebate and have since moved house can apply again. Additionally, if your system is over ten years old, you can apply to replace or upgrade it.

To further minimize installation costs, eligible Victorians can apply for an interest-free loan equivalent to the rebate amount. This loan must be repaid over four years or can be paid off sooner in a single payment.

To qualify for the Solar Homes Program, you must meet specific eligibility requirements.

As a Victorian householder, you may be eligible for a solar panel (PV) rebate if:

  • You are the owner-occupier of an existing property or the owner of a home under construction where the system will be installed.
  • The combined household taxable income of all owners is under $210,000 per year.
  • The property is valued at less than $3 million, or if it’s a home under construction, it will be valued at under $3 million upon completion.
  • The property address has not previously received a solar panel (PV) rebate or a solar battery rebate under the Solar Homes Program.
  • The property has not had a solar panel (PV) system installed in the last ten years.*

*If you are part of the Premium Feed-in Tariff scheme, consider whether replacing your existing system before the scheme ends in November 2024 would be beneficial.

Once you’re confident that you meet the eligibility criteria, read our Solar Panel PV Buyers Guide and consult with an authorized solar retailer about the best products for your home. To qualify for a rebate, the products installed must be on our approved product list. Follow the steps on how to apply for a solar panel (PV) rebate.

You’ll need to provide proof of income and details of all homeowners to confirm eligibility. If applying for a rebate for a home under construction, you’ll also need to provide details of all homeowners to confirm property ownership.

When your eligibility is confirmed, your retailer will claim the rebate on your behalf and deduct the rebate amount from the total cost of your system. You will then pay the remaining balance directly to your retailer once your solar system is installed.

Solar Homes customers who maximize the use of the energy generated by their solar panel system can save over $1,000 annually.

Solar Victoria has made it easier for existing customers to access incentives when they move house. If you previously received a solar PV rebate at your old address and have moved, you can now apply for multiple incentives for your new property. This includes a solar PV rebate and loan, a hot water rebate, and a battery loan, provided you meet the eligibility criteria.

To apply, you must be living in the property as your primary residence.

You can apply for a solar PV rebate of up to $1,400 and an interest-free loan while your house is being built, potentially saving on installation costs and starting your solar savings as soon as you move in.

If you plan to apply for the solar PV rebate while your home is under construction, we recommend:

  • Discussing your solar preferences with your builder as early as possible during the planning phase.
  • Obtaining your builder’s consent for the solar installation to occur during the build.
  • Coordinating with your builder and an authorized solar retailer under the Solar Homes Program to determine the optimal time for installation and when to submit your rebate application.
  • Reading our Solar Panel PV Buyers Guide and consulting with an authorized solar retailer about the best products for your new home.
  • Providing this information to your builder so you can apply for a rebate when your house is ready for installation during construction. Confirm the installation date with your solar retailer when advised by your builder.
  • Reading the FAQ for more information and providing the details of all homeowners to confirm property ownership.

While under construction, new homes will not be eligible for other rebates or loans under the Solar Homes Program. However, you may qualify for additional rebates once construction is complete.

The Solar Homes Program is assisting eligible Victorian households to achieve greater savings. Both new and existing solar PV customers are now able to apply for a hot water rebate and an interest-free solar battery loan, provided they meet the eligibility requirements.

Begin your research to determine which products are best suited for your home. Our Solar Buyers Guides offer information to help you learn more about solar products, enabling you to engage with retailers and enhance your savings with solar.

Maximizing Your Solar Battery Investment for Greater Efficiency and Savings

With solar battery storage, you can significantly increase the self-consumption of your solar-generated energy. This means that the energy your solar panels produce during the day can be stored and used when sunlight is not available, reducing your reliance on the grid. The result? Lower electricity bills and a greener, more sustainable energy consumption pattern.

  • Solar batteries allow you to store excess solar power generated during off-peak hours for use during peak demand times. This not only avoids the higher charges associated with grid energy consumption during these periods but also enhances your energy independence.

Solar batteries provide an essential backup power solution during outages, ensuring that your business operations or household activities can continue uninterrupted. This level of grid independence is invaluable for maintaining continuity and security.

Solar battery systems may qualify for various rebates or incentives that reduce the overall cost and enhance the return on investment. These programs are designed to encourage renewable energy adoption and can significantly offset initial installation costs.

Understanding Key Solar Battery Technologies

Lithium-ion battery systems dominate the solar battery market due to their high efficiency, long lifespan, and superior safety features. They are the preferred choice for residential and commercial solar battery systems, offering reliable energy storage solutions.

  • The capacity of a battery (measured in kWh) determines how much energy it can store, while the power output (measured in kW) dictates how quickly that energy can be delivered. Understanding these two factors is crucial when selecting the right battery size for your energy needs.

All batteries experience degradation over time, which affects their capacity and efficiency. Factors such as usage, temperature, and charging cycles contribute to this natural process, making it important to consider when planning for long-term energy storage solutions.

Financial Considerations for Maximum ROI

While the initial investment in solar batteries can be significant, the long-term cost-saving benefits through reduced utility bills and potential incentives can lead to a favorable return on investment (ROI).

Numerous government and utility programs offer rebates or financial incentives to support the adoption of solar batteries. These can significantly reduce the initial cost and improve the financial viability of your solar investment.

A comprehensive ROI analysis will consider factors such as energy savings, avoided grid charges, and the potential value of rebates or incentives. This analysis is crucial for understanding the financial impact of integrating a solar battery system.

Follow Recommended Maintenance Practices

Simple maintenance tasks, such as visual inspections and keeping your battery system free from dust and debris, can go a long way in ensuring its optimal performance and lifespan.

Understand Warranty Terms

Familiarizing yourself with the manufacturer’s warranty terms and conditions is crucial for protecting your investment. For any repairs or maintenance beyond your capability, contacting a qualified technician is advisable.

By following these guidelines and making informed decisions, you can maximize the value and efficiency of your solar battery system, contributing to a more sustainable and energy-independent future.

Solar Victoria Rebate Guide

By installing solar PV, a typical household can save an average of $750 annually on their electricity bills.

To find out if the retailer you want to use is authorized, check our website here. Ensure that your retailer quotes and installs products listed on our approved products list to be eligible.

All systems listed as Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved products meet Australian Standards and are accredited as Approved Products by the Clean Energy Council. To be eligible for a rebate, the products must be on our approved list.

The Victorian Government provides a rebate on the cost of solar panel systems up to a maximum rebate value. You should consult with your solar retailer to ensure that the size of your system meets any other applicable restrictions.

For more details, read our solar panel PV buyers guide to understand the importance of system size.

Yes, they can participate if they meet the eligibility criteria for community housing organizations. To determine if your organization is eligible, please email cho@team.solar.vic.gov.au or contact us to discuss the requirements.

Yes, solar rebates are available for addresses with multiple dwellings, but each dwelling must have its own system installed, and each household must apply for the rebate individually. Learn about how a community successfully installed solar.

Additionally, the Solar for Apartments Program offers grants to eligible Owners Corporations. Visit the Solar for Apartments Program page to see if your building qualifies for a grant through the program.

Not everyone will be able to feed excess solar energy into the grid. Your local distribution network service provider will inform you if this is possible.

No, if you have already installed a solar system, you cannot claim a rebate after installation.

FAQs: Feed-In Tariff

The Essential Services Commission regulates prices in Victoria.

Solar customers who install small-scale batteries as part of their current PV system will continue to be eligible to receive feed-in tariffs for the electricity generated and exported by their system to their retailer. This means you can install a battery and still receive the premium feed-in tariff as long as you maintain your eligibility requirements as outlined in your contract.

Solar Homes incentives are additional to the federal STC scheme. Incentives are calculated after the STC discount has been applied.

FAQs: Existing Households

Owners of existing properties can have their solar PV panels and battery installed simultaneously. Solar battery loans up to $8,800 and solar PV rebates and loans valued up to $1,400 each are available for eligible households. Visit our solar battery loan page for more information on installing solar PV with a solar battery. Note that solar PV rebates and solar battery loans require two separate applications.

If you meet all of our solar panel (PV) rebate eligibility criteria, off-grid homes are eligible for the Solar Panel rebate. However, a grid connection is required for the solar battery loan. For further information, refer to the solar panel (PV) rebate page.

Yes, if you have received a solar panel (PV) rebate as an owner-occupier for an existing property, you can also apply for a hot water rebate and a solar battery loan. Hot water rebates are available to replace existing systems and may not be suitable for customers with homes currently under construction. More information can be found on the hot water rebate page.

If you have already received a solar battery rebate, you are not eligible to apply for a solar panel (PV) or hot water rebate at the same address. Please keep in mind that a solar battery rebate differs from a solar battery loan.

If your current solar (PV) system is over ten years old at the time of your application, you might qualify for a rebate to replace or add solar panels. Ensure that your existing inverter has the capacity to support new or additional panels before accepting a quote from your retailer. Note that if you are receiving the premium feed-in tariff, any changes to your solar system could affect it. More information can be found [here](insert link).

To find out when your current system was installed, contact your electricity distributor to obtain the connection date. You can identify your distributor by entering your address on the Energy Victoria website. Alternatively, you can reach out to Energy Safe Victoria to obtain a Historical Certificate of Electrical Safety (COES) for the installation of your PV system.

Retailers and installers must follow the Victorian Government’s Waste Management Policy (e-waste). The handling, storage, and reprocessing of solar PV systems and other e-waste are regulated by the Environment Protection Regulations 2021 under the oversight of the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). For more information on priority waste and permissions, visit the EPA website.

FAQs for Existing Customers Who Have Moved House

Visit Landata for instructions on obtaining a copy of your Certificate of Title. You will need details such as your street address or lot number, and a fee may apply. Once requested, Landata will email you a PDF copy of your certificate.

Renovations to an existing home do not qualify as new construction. However, you can apply for other Solar Homes rebates and loans for an existing property if you meet the eligibility criteria.

If you demolish and rebuild your home at the same address, you can apply for the solar PV rebate and interest-free loan, provided neither you nor the property has previously received a solar PV or battery rebate.

Installing a solar PV system during the construction of your new home increases energy efficiency and helps you save on power bills immediately upon moving in. It can also reduce installation costs and streamline the process, allowing you to start benefiting from solar energy right away.

This guide aims to help you navigate the various rebates and options available through Solar Victoria, ensuring you make the most informed decisions for your renewable energy investments.

Discuss with your builder when an authorized solar retailer can access the construction site to install your solar PV system. Once you have this timeframe, you can obtain a quote from your retailer. They will recommend the best solar products for your home.

Your retailer will also guide you on the optimal time to apply for rebates and interest-free loans to ensure installation is completed within the application period. The application timeframe for homes under construction has been extended to allow up to 8 months from application to installation completion.

Maintain ongoing discussions with your builder to determine the best time for solar PV installation during construction. Inform your retailer about any potential delays so they can adjust the installation schedule accordingly. If your quote expires, the retailer will provide a new one and advise you when to apply for rebates and interest-free loans based on the new installation date.

As the customer, you should communicate regularly with both your builder and retailer throughout the construction, application, and installation phases. Keeping your retailer informed about possible delays will enable them to advise you on the best time to apply for rebates.

PV rebate customers must use an authorized solar retailer. If your builder cannot work with an authorized retailer during construction, you have the option to wait until the home is completed and then apply for a PV rebate as an owner-occupier.

Solar battery loans are not available for homes under construction. If you’re interested in installing a solar battery, conduct your research to determine what best suits your household. You can apply for a solar battery loan after the home construction is finished.

A home under construction refers to a new home that is currently being built and is not yet occupied. This includes homes that are in the process of being built or have not yet been substantially completed, as well as land on which a home is to be constructed.

Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells that absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity. These PV cells contain layers of silicon, phosphorous
